The Māori secret
In the 1970s researchers went looking for cancer compounds in New Zealand shellfish and found something else entirely: coastal Māori communities who ate raw green lipped mussels almost daily showed remarkably little arthritis, well into old age. Inland communities eating the same diet minus the mussels did not. That inconvenient observation started fifty years of research that is still running.

Perna canaliculus is endemic to New Zealand. Attempts to grow it elsewhere produce a mussel with a different lipid profile, which is a polite way of saying it doesn't work. Ours comes from the Marlborough Sounds, fed by cold currents running up from the Southern Ocean. A single mussel filters around 360 litres of that water a day, and what it filters out is what ends up in the tub.

Almost always, yes. It's a fine powder with a faint sea smell and very little taste, so it disappears into wet food and sticks to kibble if you shake the bowl. Fussy dogs occasionally notice it in the first few days — mixing it into something wet for a week usually settles that.
